A STUDY FROM VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

A reseach has been made with inflatable hip protection system. Then, they compared the result of the crash test between their inflatable prototype and a standard hip protector.

The inflatable hip protection reduced the impact force by 85% and have the potential to signicantly reduce the number of hip fractures.

Helite engineers have been working for over 10 years on the best solutions for seniors to reduce hip fractures during a fall.

A complex electronic system analyses people motion in context : when a fall is detected, the airbag deploys automatically over the hip before ground impact and insure an optimal protection.

 

A sophisticated algorithm is able to measure and analyse, more than 1000 times per second, the motion and fall in progress. The system uses different types of sensors, such as gyroscope and accelerometer, to calculate motion in context and determine if the person is walking normally or falling. The protection is ready before ground impact : the algorithm will detect the fall in 200 ms (0,2 seconds) and the airbags will inate in 80ms (0,08 seconds).
