How Does the Airbag Works?

Motorcycle/Equestrian

The trigger system is similar for the motorcycle and the equestrian vests and jackets, the inflation occurs when tension is applied on the tether.

In the event of a fall, the rider pulls the tether, which will disengage the multidirectional ball located on the bottom of the canister. This releases the pressure in the spring that is connected to a piston that will perforate the cartridge liberating the CO2 in the airbag.
The multi-directional trigger improves the inflation time, as you cannot predict which side the fall is going to happen. The lanyard is easy to install on your saddle and it needs to be fitted only once.

The only thing that needs to be done is to connect the lanyard when mounting on the horse and disconnecting when finished.

If you forget to ‘disconnect’ the vest from the saddle, you will feel a tug when dismounting the horse. This will not be enough pressure to trigger the airbag, but a reminder to unclip the lanyard.

Hip Protector

For the Hip protector, Helite has developped an algorithm that can measuring and analysing someone’s position more than 1000 times per second. The device uses different types of sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers to calculate motion in context and determine if the person is walking normally or falling.

Like the jackets, the cartridge is perforated by a needle attached to a piston, but this time it will be triggered electronically (harmless). The fqll is detected in 0.2 seconds and the airbag inflates in 0.08 seconds, which occurs before hitting the ground.

The Benefits of the Airbag Cage for the Jackets

The Benefits of the Airbag Cage for the Jackets

In 0.09 seconds your vest will be fully inflated. The pressure in the airbag is optimum to protect your neck, your back, your shoulders, your ribs and your organs. Most accidents leading to tetraplegia are due to a violent fall pushing the head backward, leading to an irreversible spinal injury. The benefit of the airbag being inflated behind the neck prevents the rider from spinal injuries and long-term damage.
The vest will remain fully inflated for about 10 seconds before it automatically deflates. The only thing that needs to be done is to change the cartridge.
